Weekly Q and A: Cole Wiper and Jared Fisher

Cole Wiper and Jared Fisher form the 1-2 punch in the Knights rotation, which may be the strongest in all of 4A KingCo.

In the first of our new weekly Q and A sessions the Bellevue Reporter sat down with Newport aces Cole Wiper and Jared Fisher.

Wiper, who struggled with shoulder injury last season, has signed to play next season at the University of Oregon. Fisher, who also missed much of 2010 with mononucleosis, is signed to play for the Washington Huskies.

Both are looking to help the Knights make a return trip to Safeco Field for the 2011 4A state championships.

Bellevue Reporter: So who throws harder?

Jared Fisher: We’ve been clocked pretty much the same. What do we top out at?

Cole Wiper: About 92, 93 MPH…

BR: Who has better stuff?

JF: Cole’s got good stuff, he’s got a better slider than I do.

CW: He’s getting one though…

BR: Could you get a hit off Cole?

JF: If you give me three at bats, I bet I could maybe get one…at least off the bat.

BR: Could you get a hit off Jared?

CW: No.

BR: Cole, living in this area, the Oregon Ducks aren’t very popular. What made you decide to sign at UO?

CW: The coaching there is unbelievable. Coach Horton – they brought in some of the best coaches in the nation.

BR: I know your parents are both Washington Huskies, how did they feel about you heading to Eugene?

CW: They were happy for me. Obviously they have some loyalty to UW, but they wanted me to go where I felt was the best fit for me.

BR: How do you feel about the Oregon Ducks, Jared?

JF: Don’t like them, never have. I’m a Husky. I grew up here. I grew up liking the Huskies, my dad went there. I go to the football games and basketball games when I can. I liked all the schools, but Washington was always in the back of my mind and I knew I wanted to go there.

BR: I know you guys both struggled to stay healthy last season, how excited are you to have one more run together as seniors?

JF: We want to put something together. I got sick last year, Cole had shoulder problems so we want to put everything together this year.

CW: It’s our last chance to really make something of our high school careers. I’ve been looking forward to this year for a long time and so I’m glad it’s finally here

BR: Who is the one guy in 4A KingCo that you don’t want to see at the dish with the game on the line?

JF: I don’t like Dillon Davis. He hit a couple bombs off me last year. But there’s no guy I don’t think I can get out.

CW: Redmond has a couple guys who are pretty solid. Those will be fun games because it will be a good match-up.

BR: All right, Over/Under 10 combined wins this season for you two?

JF: I’ll push.
