The ‘old’ crowd | Patty Luzzi

There are thousands of emails swirling around with the subject, “You know you’re old when…” But I don’t need an email to tell me that I am pushing 60 like a self-propelled lawnmower. However, lately I have noticed a few glaring indicators of my stage of life.

My first hint that we have joined the ranks of the seniors is that now I put our medications and supplements in those day-of-the-week boxes. Great invention, but it’s probably only a matter of time until we start taking each other’s pills.

I was digiting around the radio dial a few days ago. I came across an “oldies” station … for my kids’ generation! They play Nirvana, U2, and Pearl Jam. The Beatles, Stones, and Credence have irrevocably become “Classic Rock.” Guy Lombardo and Louis Prima have received a fatal blow, having been kicked to the curb of AM radio.

Another shock-wave of age hit me when I went to hear a really great new band called Lotus Crush. There’s a cute and talented guy in the band. I am exactly as old as his mother. I AM his mother. I worry that it doesn’t bode well for the band if a mom likes them (and I really do), but fortunately they just make me feel that I have good taste in music.

When Lenny and I went to get new phones in the middle of June, we felt like we were dealing with drug dealers. We got FREE smart phones and FREE data package (internet access) for one year! Unfortunately, we can’t figure out how to send a simple text, or make a phone call. We just never thought that anything so smart could make us feel so stupid. We will persist, however. Maybe mastering these “phones” will make us feel young, at least until they are replaced by genius phones. After all, the phones were FREE! I guess senior citizens like free stuff.
