Approximately 300 people helped raised $600,000 on March 1 at Komen Puget Sound’s gala to support the fight against breast cancer.
The night honored KING 5’s Jean Enersen for her longstanding contributions to raising awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection. Enersen also was recognized for her support of Komen Puget Sound that goes back to the founding of the affiliate over 20 years ago.
The event was attended by a number of civic and business leaders and celebrities, including former Gov. Gary Locke and former First Lady Mona Locke.
Seventy-five percent of net funds raised at the gala will be spent in the western Washington community to provide free mammograms and breast cancer treatment support. Komen Puget Sound is the largest private funder of free mammogram screenings to low income women in Washington state, providing nearly 10,000 free mammograms in 2013.
The remaining twenty-five percent goes directly to fund global medical research to better diagnose, treat and ultimately cure breast cancer.
“I’m gratified and overwhelmed by the generosity of our donors and sponsors who came together to raise $600,000 to fight breast cancer,” said David Richart, Komen Puget Sound executive director. “I am also delighted to be able to recognize Jean Enersen. Jean is a tremendous force for good, and we are very lucky to have her as such a strong ally in our battle against breast cancer”
Komen Puget Sound Affiliate was established in 1993 and, since then, has provided more than $19 million to fund mammograms, patient navigation and treatment support within its 16 county western Washington service area. Over the same period, the affiliate has invested over $7 million into medical research for breast cancer.
The Puget Sound affiliate is the fifth largest Komen affiliate out of a network of 120 affiliates across the country. More information is available at www.komenpugetsound.org.
