Wrestling season gets underway as Newport, Interlake compete in Clash of the Classes | Prep sports news

The Knights and Saints met up with some of the best from around KingCo, while Bellevue had a pair of wrestlers in the top-10 at the Spud Walley Invitational.

Newport and Interlake competed in the Clash of the Classes, with 4A, 3A and 2A KingCo competitors priming for the wrestling season.

The Knights lost matches to Liberty, Mercer Island, Lake Washington and Interlake.

David Yingling won all four of his matches at 120 pounds.

Adam Little (126), Humza Talat (152) and Andrew Ophus (160) won matches against Liberty, with Ophus also getting a win. Little also picked up a win against Lake Washington, by fall in 48 seconds.

The Saints lost matches to 4A foes Issaquah, Skyline and Eastlake, before beating Newport 52-22 in the final round.

Brandon Gin won by fall at 126 against the Eagles, with John Harmin (152), Bhekin Simangll (182) and John Palagachu (195) earning wins.

Harmon won by fall against Skyline as well, along with Palagachu and Dean Jones at 285.

Gim, Jones and Richardson picked up wins against Eastlake and the Saints won 10 of the 14 matches against the Knights in the final match.

The Saints fell to Liberty 42-29 in a dual meet, but picked up wins from Albert Chen (113), Brandon Gim (126), Kevin Richardson (160) and Bhek Simanago, who needed only 43 seconds to win by fall at 195 pounds.

Sammamish took the trip north to Bellingham to compete in a dual meet tournament and had a pair of wrestlers finish with 3-1 marks on the day.

Rathtana Duong picked up a win by fall, a 10-2 decision and a forfeit victory at 126 pounds for the Totems.

James Tate wrestled at 182 pounds despite his regular place this season coming at 170, and won three of his four matches as well.

Tate picked up a second period pin and also won by technical fall, 16-1 in another match.

Max Hummer also wrestled up at 195 and finished 2-2, picking up a pair of pins.

Bellevue took a dual meet 60-12 over Sammamish to open the 3A KingCo schedule.

Jason Presley, Nathan Smith, Cole Bouwman, Garrett Williams, Chandler Ewing, Gabe Buccino, and Zachary England were winners for the Wolverines. Cole Ransom, Michael Janisch, and Vlad Tsurbeleu won by forfeit.

Gabe Buccino was fifth for Bellevue in Sedro-Woolley at the Spud Walley Invitational, and teammate Garrett Williams finished sixth in his weight class.

Bellevue gymnasts fall to Mercer Island

Bellevue broke in a host of new team members in the first gymnastics meet of the season, falling 145-119 to Mercer Island in the team scoring.

Michelle Louie picked up a win in the floor exercise for the Wolverines.
