Wolverines undefeated on the soccer pitch

Excellence is a staple of the Bellevue Wolverines girls soccer program.

The Wolverines finished the 2013 season with an overall record of 17-4 and captured third place in the Class 3A state tournament. Through the first seven games of the 2014 season the Wolverines have put together a perfect 9-0 record.

Bellevue first-year head coach Matt Dorman, who has coached club soccer for the past decade, is enjoying the transition to coaching in the high school ranks. Dorman also coaches teams in the Washington Youth Soccer Elite Player Development program as well.

“It’s a different environment, but the sport is the same no matter where the game is played,” Dorman said.

The Wolverines displayed their moxie and intestinal fortitude in a 3-2 victory against the Liberty Patriots on Sept. 30 in Bellevue.

“That was a really good game for us. We definitely were tested. We were down 2-0, but as a group we just pulled up our socks and got it done,” Dorman said.

Teams find out what they’re made of when adversity stares them right in the face. It’s easy to be positive when everything is going perfectly and running smoothly. The fact that the Wolverines scored three unanswered goals to erase the two-goal deficit, speaks volumes about their character and desire. Dorman said there isn’t one star on the Wolverines, but instead is a collective unit focused on the goals and tasks at hand.

“We have such good balance and have had eight different goal-scorers. It’s difficult for the opposition to pin-point our strengths because we have so many good players. If they try to stop one player, we can exploit them in different ways. We don’t rely on one player, but instead rely on the whole group to be successful. We do that not just with our varsity team, but with all three of our teams (varsity, jayvee, c-team) in the program,” he said. “We have a great group of girls who have bought into what we’re trying to achieve.”

Dorman expects his team to turn in a season for the ages.

“We have some lofty aims and goals, but we know it’s a process and that we have to take everything one game at a time. We want to improve every day. We want to make sure we are never looking too far ahead and that we’re working hard,” he said.

The Wolverines are certainly on the right path.
