Bellevue knocked off defending Class 3A girls champion Prairie 58-51 with a furious 17-0 run in a stretch during the fourth quarter that sent the Wolverines to the Tacoma Dome for Thusday’s state basketball tournament in the Tacoma Dome.

Sophomore Mandy Steward was the leading scorer with 20 points, including 10-14 from the free throw line, while Tatiana Struen added a double-double of her own with 16 points and 16 rebounds while fellow freshman Shelby Cansler had 14 points for coach Leah Krautter’s team in the win.

The Falcons from Prairie Brush led by 10 points with four and a half minutes remaining in the game before Bellevue, keyed in large part by Steward, began a 21-4 run to conclude the game and punch one of only eight tickets to the Tacoma Dome next Thursday.

Sunday’s draw sent the Wolverines to a 2 p.m. quarterfinal on Thursday against Glacier Peak of the Wesco conference. The winner will face the winner of another game between Cleveland and University.

Coach Steve Haizlip and the Newport boys are also on the way south next week after a trip across the Cascades and a defacto away game against Eastmont in Wenatchee, coming back with a 48-41 win.

Sophomore Calvin Throckmorton and guard Will Ferris combined for 25 points to help the Knights to the win and the program’s first quarterfinal appearance since 2002.

The Knights will be on the court first in the Tacoma Dome on Thursday against Curtis in a 9 a.m. tip.
