Bellevue softball splits double-header, must win two straight for state spot
Bellevue won their opening round game in the Sea-King District softball tournament on Wednesday, 8-3 over Nathan Hale. The Wolverines took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before blowing things open in the bottom of the fifth with a six-spot that put the game out of reach for the Raiders.
Emily Fleischman tossed six innings of one-run softball to pick up the win. Fleischman struck out nine while walking only a single batter.
Katie Savard had a 3-4 game at the plate, knocking in a pair. Lisa Bennett and Taylor Cooke had the other multi-hit performances for Bellevue, who moved into the tournament quarterfinals with the win.
The Wolverines fell the top-seeded Cougars from Holy Names 4-1 in the second game of the afternoon.
Bellevue again jumped on top in the first with a run when Katie Savard brought home Fleischman on a RBI single.
But the Cougars didn’t flinch, tying the score in the third with a run before taking the lead in the fourth with a home run and a RBI single of their own.
Meanwhile, Holy Names’ Sylvie Thomas kept the Wolverines’ bats quiet after the first, allowing only three hits over the final six innings and not surrendering another run.
The loss moves Bellevue into the loser’s bracket of the tournament and measn they will need to win consecutive games to get back to the state tournament. They will face West Seattle, the third-seed from Metro, in the consolation semi-finals today, which begin at 2 p.m. again at Lower Woodland Park in Seattle.
A win moves them into the fifth-place game, where they will meet the winner of the other consolation semi-final between Blanchet and Chief Sealth.
