Knights baseball wins a pair; Bellevue alum finishes strong at NCAA Regional Meet

The Newport baseball team moved up in the state rankings with another pair of wins and the Sammamish Lacrosse Club continued their strong performance in Division II boys lacrosse.

Hal DeBerry’s Newport Knights stormed to two more impressive wins last week and now find themselves ranked third in 4A by the Washington Baseball Poll.

Newport shutout Skyline behind ten strikeouts from Cole Wiper, who allowed only two hits in a complete game performance on a judicious 83 pitches. Wiper also had a pair of hits in the game. Jared Fisher and Daniel Altchech had two hits each to help move the Knights to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in 4A KingCo play.

On Saturday, the Knights got a small taste of The Show in a game against Puyallup played at Safeco Field. Fisher got the start and combined with four other Newport pitchers to three-hit the Vikings. The Knights will face last-place Eastlake on Monday, weather permitting, at home with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.

Sammamish downs Gig Harbor for 7th lacrosse win

Tyler Schmidt scored 5 goals for the Sammamish Lacrosse Club in a 19 – 1  win over Gig Harbor in boys D-2 lacrosse.

After jumping to an early 2-0 lead, the Totems kept Gig Harbor off the board in the second half and led 4-0 at the break. Sammamish then dialed up their offensive attack in the second half, scoring seven goals in the third quarter and another eight in the fourth and final period to get the win.

Sammamish (7-1-0) will next meet Skagit Valley (1-2-0), Tuesday, April 5 in a 7 p.m. start at Newport High School.

Bonincontri posts career-best marks at NCAA gymnastics regionals

Bellevue High School alum Dana Bonincontri had another outstanding set of performances at the NCAA Gymnastics Regional competition on Saturday. Bonincontri highlighted her day by finishing eighth in the All-Around with a career-best mark of 38.9. That score was only fifteen-tenths of a point short of qualifying for the national competition.

In the Floor competition, Bonincontri tied the best mark of her career with a 9.8, which was good for a 19th place tie in the 42 gymnast event. Bonincontri earned a 9.725 on the vault and a 9.650 on the uneven bars.
