Davis attains perfection in the pitching circle

Interlake senior softball player Shaefer Davis completes the coveted "perfect game" against Bellevue

Interlake Saints senior softball player Shaefer Davis turned in the best performance of her high school career in the pitching circle against one of her team’s biggest rivals.

Davis, who is the Saints’ No. 1 starting pitcher, attained the rare “perfect game” for the first time in her life in a 10-0 victory in five innings against the Bellevue Wolverines on April 4. Davis didn’t allow a hit and didn’t walk any Bellevue hitters in Interlake’s emphatic victory. The Saints improved to 2-9 overall with the win.

“We went out there in the first inning and got those first three outs right away,” Davis said. “From then on I knew it was going to be a pretty good game. Sammamish is our biggest rival but Bellevue is a pretty big rival too. To beat them in a sport, it was really nice and was a good feeling.”

Davis credited her teammates for making huge plays defensively in the best game of her high school career.

“Getting a perfect game is a team thing,” she said. “The defense made the plays they needed to make. I had a great defense behind me.”

Davis said it was special to share the historic moment with catcher Courtney Johnson at the conclusion of the game. She has been best friends with Johnson since the second grade.

“She has (played catcher) for me so many times,” she said. “To have her catch for me in the perfect game was pretty awesome.”

The perfect game was only in jeopardy a few times against the Wolverines.

“There was one ball hit to the outfield but our centerfielder caught it,” Davis said. “There was a few times when there was a full-count but we made it through.”

Despite Interlake’s paltry 2-9 record, Davis said her team exudes team camaraderie on and off the field.

“These are really a great group of girls. We are a really tight-knit team. We just come out here every day and there is something new we work to improve on. It is really fun and is a great way to end my senior year,” she said.
