Chen takes singles title for Newport

Heading into the final tournament of the year, Angela Chen is still perfect.

The Newport senior kept her unbeaten record in tact and also continued the utterly dominant streak of winning each set she has played this year, sweeping her way through the 4A KingCo bracket to capture the conference title.

Chen’s regular season prowess earned her a bye into the second round before she dispatched her first round opponent 6-2, 6-0. The quarterfinal and semi-final matches were not much different, as Chen won both in straight sets 6-0, 6-0, and captured the championship with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

The 4A state tournament is May 24 and 25 in Richland at Columbia Basin Racquet Club and Richland High School.

BCS hires new boys basketball coach

Bellevue Christian didn’t have to look far for its new boys basketball coach, as the school announced Brian Douma will take over the position vacated by state hall of famer and prep sports legend Mike Downs.

Douma, a BCS and Calvin College alum, played for Downs during his time as a Viking and has also spent time as a coach with his former program under Downs. His coaching experience also extends to Lake Washington and Shoreline Christian.
