Bellevue resident Jan Stone, 71, won the Women’s Senior Veterans (ages 70-79) class at the Head of the Charles Regatta held in Boston, Mass. to capture her second straight championship in the event.
Stone, who began rowing in 1995 as a retirement activity in Princeton, New Jersey, rowed an adjusted championship time of 24:54.28 one year after setting the course record of at the same event.
“I’ve been fortunate to have excellent coaching and great support from my friends,” Stone said. “And, a lot of luck.”
The Head of the Charles Regatta is known as the largest two-day regatta in the world and attracted over 8,000 athletes in 55 separate races.
Stone said she trains year round at Pocock Rowing Center in Seattle and participates in a handful of other races, but nothing compares to the Charles.
“The Charles is the most exciting race of the year,” Stone said. “I felt a growing elation when I won. It grew over several days.”
