Bellevue set to open 3A KingCo baseball tournament, Newport and Interlake downed | Prep sports news

The Wolverines begin their conference tournament May 12, while Interlake was knocked from the field in its opener on Saturday

Interlake was knocked from the 3A KingCo baseball tournament in eight innings Saturday, falling 3-2 to Juanita after the game was pushed back two days because of rain.

Regular season champion Bellevue will be waiting May 12 at Bannerwood Park for a 4 p.m. first pitch, with the winner earning a spot in Tuesday’s tournament title game.

The loser will play May 14 against the loser of another semifinal between Mount Si and Mercer Island.

Only the tournament champion from 3A KingCo earns an automatic state tournament spot, with the second place finisher taking on a Metro League opponent for the district’s final berth.

Newport lost its first game in the 4A KingCo baseball tournament, falling 3-1 to the hosts from Woodinville.

The Knights got a complete game effort on the mound from pitcher Ryan Kingma, but managed only a single run in the bottom half of the first inning in the loss.

Newport finished with six base hits, and was also unable to capitalize on three Falcons’ errors.

The loss sends coach Brad Files and his squad to a loser-out game May 12 at Inglemoor against rival Issaquah, which fell 6-1 to Crest champ Redmond in its opener.

Newport and the Eagles split their two regular season games this year, with the winner of the rubber match set to face the loser of a semifinal between Bothell and Eastlake May 13.
