Assistant promoted to head job for Sammamish baseball | Prep sports news

Pete Orgill, a graduate of Davis High School in Yakima and former head coach

The new face of the Sammamish baseball program isn’t really new at all.

Athletic Director Pat McCarthy announced on Tuesday that Pete Orgill, an assistant with the Totems for the past three seasons, will be the next head baseball coach for the Totems.

“He’s a tremendous coach,” McCarthy said. “He was a valuable part of the staff before and it’s great to keep that continuity in the program.”

Orgill prepped at Yakima’s Davis High School, where he lettered all four years in baseball before graduating in 1995. He would go on to play catcher and first base for the University of Washington, where he was a member of back-to-back conference championships and was voted a captain of the 1999 team.

The Anaheim Angels chose Orgill in the 36th round of the MLB first-year player draft out of college, but shoulder injuries kept his professional career from blossoming.

Finding a familiar face was an added bonus for an already qualified candidate, according to McCarthy.

“He’s been a head coach and played at a high level. We’re just excited to keep him on board,” McCarthy said. “The student-athletes know him and it’s great to keep that continuity in the program.”

Now a teacher, Orgill was the head baseball coach at rival Interlake from 2005-2008.
