Craig Groshart | Twitter, Tweets and the online world

I’m now on Twitter, although you wouldn’t know it by the lack of “Tweets” I file. Still, it is part of the new way of doing things, so there I am.

Oh, you can find me here. I actually had to look it up. Didn’t I say I wasn’t very active.

Despite not doing much of anything on the site, I already am being followed by six others, including the Seattle Times. I guess I should start following them, too.

I think that’s what actually happens. Everyone is following everyone else.

Still, I know I should get with the program. One of our reporters, Josh Hicks, has about 120 people following him. I see him “Tweeting” all the time at his desk. Oh, sorry, “Tweeting” is sending out a message – 140 characters maximum – telling people what you are doing.

I thought of doing this the other day, but all I could think to say was that I was “Tweeting.” I don’t think that’s very interesting. I would “Tweet” more, but it seems like I would be telling the competition (the Seattle Times, remember) what I was up to here at the paper. I’m also being following by the House Democratic Caucus. I would think that they had better things to do.

At the start, I was being followed by some others, too, but they’ve dropped off. That’s what I get for not “Tweeting” enough, I guess.

Actually, I not sure I hold out much hope for Twitter. I think it may have the problem now facing Facebook. I also joined it a while back. Next, my daughter discovered I’m on the service and promptly told the world that “pigs were beginning to fly” because I had joined. I guess older adults aren’t suppose to do that. That may be true of Twitter, too.

If I were really “with the program,” so to speak, I would be Twittering about my commenting about Twittering. I suppose someone would be interested in that, but I hope not.

Personally, I like answering the telephone and talking to people. I even like meeting them face-to-face. I suppose that means there’s no hope for me.

Maybe I’ll Twitter about that.

If you have Internet access, you really need to check out the Bellevue Reporter’s Web site: www.bellevuereporter.com.

We really aren’t just a newspaper any more. We’re really an information provider.

The reporters put stories up on our Web site daily, not just at one time, but throughout the day. I even see them posting at night. I know as an editor I don’t have a life, but I’ve held out hope for them.

The plus is that there is a constant stream of news about Bellevue available to you. And, because the Internet has unlimited space for everything, you often get more details in the Web versions of our stories than in the print.

Each medium has its advantage. My recommendation? Read both.

By the way, the Internet is a wonderful thing. So many people sharing so many things. Here is part of a list I recently received. So, how bad is the economy? Read, and enjoy.

CEO’s are now playing miniature golf.

Hot wheels and Matchbox stocks are trading higher than GM.

Obama met with small businesses to discuss the Stimulus Package: GE, Pfizer and Citigroup.

McDonalds is selling the 1/4 ouncer.

Parents in Beverly Hills fired their nannies and learned their children’s names.

The most highly paid job is now jury duty.

Dick Cheney took his stockbroker hunting.

Motel Six won’t leave the light on.

And finally … Congress says they are looking into the Bernard Madoff scandal. The guy who made $50 billion disappear is being investigated by the people who made $700 billion disappear.

So, thanks for reading. And, if you have time, send me a Tweet. Who knows, maybe I’ll actually check in and send something back….
