Catherine “Cathy” Powell

Catherine Buchanan McKellar was born March 26, 1912 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the youngest of twelve children. She passed away in her sleep December 11, 2010 at the age of 98. Cathy moved with her family to the United States in 1930. She was united in marriage to George Powell in 1929. Their marriage spanned sixty-three years until George’s death in 1992. Cathy and George owned and operated Catherine’s Dainty Maid Bakery on Bellevue’s Main Street, which now houses a dress boutique, and lived in the house behind, now on the Historic Landmark Register and mentioned in the book First 100 years of Bellevue as being a boarding house for whalers that docked at Meydenbauer Bay. Cathy later worked as a receptionist at the Frederick & Nelson’s beauty shop. She was active in the Elks Emblem Club, the Eagles of Seattle where she was a member of the fencing team, and the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce. She also liked to sew intricate doll clothing for her grandkids, and was a talented painter, professional hat maker, cook and great dancer. Cathy is survived by her daughter Catherine Edwards of Bothell; son, Col. Michael Powell of Oak Harbor; grandchildren, Rev. Lindalee Purdy and husband Rod, Terrie Edwards Ashbaugh and husband Robert, Amy and Molly Powell; great grandchildren, Sarah Lattigs and her husband Larry, Ryan Henderson, Colin and Parker Ashbaugh, Gavin and Anthony Powell. A funeral service was held at Bothell Funeral Home on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 11AM. Graveside service followed at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Bellevue, WA.
