Barbara Estelle (Greenwood) Whittemore

Barbara Whittemore passed away October 24, 2010 surrounded by family. She was born April 23, 1918 in Milton, MA. She is survived by her children: daughters Bonnie Turner of Harrisburg, PA, Corin Whittemore, and partner Gani Ruthellen of Kirkland, WA; and son Donald Whittemore and wife Andrea of Lawrence KS; grandchildren Todd and Aletha Turner, Luke, Paul, Mark and Coryjean Whittemore; and great grandson Samuel Whittemore. She was predeceased by her husband Whit Whittemore, and her brothers Milburn, Harry and Donald Greenwood. Barbara attended grade school on Mercer Island, Garfield High School in Seattle and the University of Washington where she majored in drama. She married O.J. (Whit) Whittemore in 1941 and moved east with him. Barbara was in summer stock theater and acted alongside Martha Raye, Tallulah Bankhead, and Joan Fontaine among others. In 1964, she moved back to Seattle with her family as Whit had accepted a position at the U of W. Barbara was active in the Church of Christ, Scientist, including serving as a reader, and was a board member of the nursing home Sunrise Haven in Kent, WA. She was also active with the Civic Light Opera, and the University Alumni Women’s Auxiliary. Barbara loved traveling, hiking, camping, kayaking, and ice skating. She was very devoted to family and would often gather together her relations. Those who knew her will miss her gracious sociability, her kindness and her humor.
