Tent City returning to Bellevue

The shifting homeless encampment, Tent City 4 will return to Bellevue at the end of July.

Currently stationed in Redmond, the camp will move to Bellevue’s Temple B’nai Torah, located at 15727 Northeast Fourth Street on July 23, according to the Tent City 4 website. City planning documents show that the organizations that run the encampment, Seattle Housing and Resources Effort (SHARE) and Women’s Housing Equality and Enhancement League (WHEEL), submitted a permit application this week.

The camp was created in May 2004 and limits itself to places of worship in eastern King County outside of Seattle. It has been housed in Bellevue several times since its creation, most recently in October 2009 at First United Methodist Church.

The encampment, which will house and feed approximately 100 residents for 90 days before moving on to its next location, garners extra law enforcement attention to make sure residents both of the camp and nearby neighborhoods are kept safe.

Tent City 4 does criminal background checks on everyone wishing to become a resident of the group, according to Tent City’s site. Entry is denied to registered sex offenders and anyone with an outstanding warrant for arrest. The camp also enforces a code of conduct that includes requirements of sobriety and non-violence.

Dumpsters, portable toilets, and a shower, paid for by SHARE, are provided to address sanitation concerns. In order to control access to the encampment, there is only one entry/exit to the camp that is guarded at all times.
