Overlake Service League awards scholarships

Twenty three Bellevue High School graduates have received scholarships from Overlake Service League. Of the students, 12 were first year recipients, 6 from Sammamish High School, 4 from Interlake High School, 1 from Bellevue High School and 1 from Newport High School.

A 12-person committee began the selection process in September 2008 and worked throughout the year until the final selections were made in June.

“There were so many eligible and qualified candidates this year that the final selection process was very difficult,” said Meg Bolan, Chairman of the Educational Grants Committee. “Through these grants, students can pursue higher education whether vocational or academic.”

The scholarships are based primarily on need, as well as education goals and motivation, community service and academic achievement. Each recipient is planning to attend a public college, university, technical or vocational school within the state.

The 12 first-year recipients are eligible to apply for a second and third year award. This year Overlake Service League also award five second-year scholarships and six for the third year. Scholarships ranged from $500-$3,000 for a total of $34,500.
