Overlake Hospital Medical Center’s first baby born at the hospital made a return visit Friday as part of the center’s 50th anniversary.

Kathy Cziprian Soule, the first baby ever born at Overlake, was on hand with Dr. Stewart Hilscher, the physician who delivered her. The delivery occurred before Overlake had even formally opened the hospital to the public.

Delores Barker, the nurse who admitted the first baby, also was at the event.

Soule, now 50, flew in for the event from Southern California.

Overlake began as a vision of community leaders and volunteers in 1953. With support and funding from the community, Overlake was ready to open its doors on Oct. 16, 1960. The hospital got an early start when its first patient, Rose Cziprian, couldn’t make it over the bridge to Seattle in time to have her baby.

She was admitted to Overlake Memorial Hospital and gave birth to Katherine Mary at 11:04 a.m., hours before the hospital was set to officially open. Over the last 50 years more than 150,000 babies have been delivered at Overlake.
