Medina City Council elects new mayor, deputy mayor

The Medina City Council on Jan. 11 elected council member Bret Jordan as mayor and councilmember Shawn Whitney as deputy mayor for the city.

Medina operates with a council-manager form of government, with the mayor serving as the city’s primary representative and as presiding officer and chair at all meetings of the city council.

The deputy mayor assumes these responsibilities in the absence of the mayor.

The city manager acts as executive for the city government, and oversees its day-to-day operations.

Jordan’s four-year term with the council began in January 2008. He served on the facilities subcommittee from 2008 through 2009, and on the Medina Planning Commission between October 2003 and December 2007, acting as vice chair in 2006 and chair in 2007.

Whitney’s four-year term also began in January 2008. She served on the facilities, finance, and personnel subcommittees during 2008 and 2009. She has been a member of the Medina Emergency Preparedness Committee since 2005.
