Heritage Corner | Medina news 100 years ago

For a brief period in 1909, Medina citizens W. R. Barnes and A. L. Craig published a weekly newspaper, the Medina Booster. The archivist at the Eastside Heritage Center has been unable to locate any surviving copies of this newspaper. However, some items were republished in a 1924 issue of the Lake Washington Reflector. Enjoy a few excerpts from the May 8, 1909 issue of the Medina Booster:

“R. M. Bailey and wife, residing until recently on Lakeside Avenue, this city, disappeared last Monday, and up until press time they had not been located. Mr. and Mrs. Bailey started out for Madison Park in a canoe and have not been heard from since.”

“Leonore Sheldon is recovering from the measles, with which she has been ill for the past week. Many other cases of measles have been reported.”

“While making a landing at Madison Park last Tuesday, the Three Star, Capt. E. W. Johnstone’s new cruiser, ran against a timber in the boathouse, putting a hole through her side above the water line.”

“C. E. Barnard went to Seattle today with a basket of hen fruit [eggs].”

“Miss Bessie Bates is home on a month’s vacation.”

“Wanted: Two young ladies with good voices to sing in the choir. Address Booster.”
