Heritage Corner | AYP Ships – Aquilo

Array

This is another in a series of photographs of the excursion steamers that took tourists around Lake Washington during the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. Most of these vessels were built at Anderson Shipyards in Houghton.

Named for the Roman god of the north wind, the Aquilo, along with her sister ship Triton, was built in 1909 to serve the AYP fairgoers. Both ships were 90-feet long and could carry 250 passengers. In later years, the Aquilo served as a passenger ferry for the residents of Mercer Island.
