Four high school students from Bellevue were awarded scholarships in the 2010 New Poet’s Society Poetry Contest in a ceremony April 26.
Duncan Byargeon of Bellevue High School was awarded the $500 Redmond Rotary Club scholarship for his poem “Dark Skinned Warrior.” Kathleen Zhou of Interlake High School was also given the Rotary Club scholarship for her untitled poem.
Aside from four Redmond Rotary Club scholarships, the society gave out the $500 Mark L. Di’re Award to Jacklyn Grambush, also a student at Interlake, for her untitled poem and the $1,000 Judges Choice Award to another Interlake student, Kaitlin Tullis, for her poem “Not a Little Laugh.”
According to Rick Smith, the founder and president of the New Poet’s Society, 176 students entered poems into the contest. Each high school selected top candidates and sent submissions to the New Poet Society Judges Panel that chose the winners.
