Bellevue needs a competition pool

It's amazing that Bellevue high school students perform at such a high level in water sports without an indoor competition pool.

I got to spend last weekend watching two Bellevue area high school teams win state championships. I left Federal Way Aquatic center Saturday morning after Newport Girls won the state title for a second year in a row and headed to Gig Harbor where I sat in a spectacular high school Natatorium built on the campus of Curtis High School. There the Bellevue Boys Water Polo team won their third title in a row.

What an amazing accomplishment it is that these student athletes are able to perform at such a high level without a high school pool or for that matter an indoor competition pool in the entire city of Bellevue. Is there any other high school sport that has to leave town to find a facility or field to hold a “home” sporting event?

It would be nice if our city and school district to come together to support our kids as well as our community with a new aquatic facility that every Bellevue citizen young and old could use. If Gig Harbor and Federal Way can do it, why can’t we?
