Bellevue striving for 7th consecutive state football title

The Bellevue Wolverines will face a familiar foe in the state championship game

A seventh consecutive state championship is on the line for the Bellevue Wolverines at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 5 against the Eastside Catholic Crusaders at the Tacoma Dome.

The Wolverines, who are playing for their 12th state championship in the past 14 years, are facing a familiar foe with everything on the line. In 2013, Bellevue defeated Eastside Catholic 52-20 in the state championship game. Eastside Catholic and Bellevue are separated by a mere 15 miles, but play in different leagues. Bellevue dominates the Class 3A KingCo Division while Eastside Catholic is powerful in the Metro Mountain Division. Before the 2014 regular season kicked off, Eastside Catholic head coach Jeremy Theilbahr said his team’s primary focus was to find a way to defeat the Wolverines.

“Getting over the hump against Bellevue is a monumental task and that’s the challenge for us,” Theilbahr said during an August practice session. “Our mission is to win a state championship.”

They will have their chance against a Bellevue team that has won 67 straight games and is coming off a hard-fought 20-10 win against the Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks. Bellevue quarterback Justus Rogers, who rumbled for 93 yards rushing against the Tomahawks, will be prepared for battle in the title game.

“It’s a great opportunity. We’re all blessed to be in this position. We know how to win and we know what we have to do this upcoming week and that is have a great week of practice,” Rogers said following win against the Tomahawks.

Wolverines’ offensive lineman Henry Roberts said they don’t want to let the Bellevue Wolverines football family down. The tradition of success is always on their minds each time they step onto the field.

“It’s about our tradition and coming out here and trying to get better every day. We’re always thinking about the people that have played in the past for Bellevue. It’s not about what people on the outside think of us, it’s more about the people who have played for Bellevue and the standard that we’re held to because of them,” Roberts said during an October practice session.

A champion will be crowned on the Eastside tonight. Pure joy and jubilation will be on display in either Bellevue or Sammamish. I can’t wait to see this showdown between King County juggernauts.
