Newport High graduate Kevin Liu named state AP Scholar

Kevin Liu of Newport High School class of 2010 has been named a State AP Scholar, one of only two in the state of Washington, by the National College Board. He was honored for his achievement on Advanced Placement Exams. Liu earned the distinction for taking 19 AP exams.

Now a freshman at Yale University, Liu was valedictorian at Newport, ranking first out of the 2010 class of over 400 students. As president of Newport’s two student organizations, Math Club and Junior State of America (JSA), Liu was active in volunteer activities both at school and the Bellevue community.

A recipient of National Merit Scholarship and a candidate for the Presidential Scholar, Liu plays the piano and violin, runs cross country, and did summer interns at UW biology labs.

The State AP Scholar Award is granted to the one male and one female student in each U.S. state and the District of Columbia with grades of 3 or higher on the greatest number of AP exams, and then the highest average grade (at least 3.5) on all AP exams taken. In addition to the State AP Scholar Award, Liu was also named a National AP Scholar for earning an average of at least 4 on all exams taken.
