Wolverine grapplers win first tournament in over a decade with Shoreline Invitational win

Thanks to a bevy of big performances, the Bellevue High wrestling team captured the Shoreline Invitational wrestling tournament title, defeating reigning champion O’Dea by 14 points.

Bellevue and O’Dea each had six weight class champions and the final score came down to the results of wrestlers in the consolation matches, said Bellevue coach Tom Ovens.

It was the first tournament championship for the Bellevue team in at least a decade, Ovens added. Several Wolverines took first place finishes in the event, including Matt Casimes (103-pounds), Aki Chinen (119), Davis Jones (135), Alex Murphy (140), Erik Ovens (152) and freshman Jimmy Trull, who won the 215-pound weight class for his first tournament title.

Matt Verstegen (135), Jun Park (140) and Jin Park (285) all took second place finishes for Bellevue, while Derrick Mychaylo finished in third in the 145-pound class.

Carter Steinhoff (112) and Harry Waldock (135) finished in fourth in their respective classes for the Wolverines.
