Wellman sees hopes dashed in SuperSearch finale

While one dream was realized, another was dashed.

When Vini Oliveira was deemed the winner of the Seattle Sounders SuperSearch, it meant the dream ended for Oliver Wellman.

Wellman, 23, said before Sunday night’s finale that winning the competition would all come down to what the coaches were looking for. Wellman didn’t survive the cut from 10 to four, and when the final two players up for the one spot were revealed to be Oliveira and Junior Garcia, both forwards, it was obvious that coaches were looking for an offensive prospect.

Although Wellman wasn’t picked, a player who had followed much the same path in Oliveira was. Both players were standouts at Sammamish High School before moving on to BCC. Wellman, who is currently a member of Western Washington University’s soccer team, said the two had a healthy rivalry throughout the process.

“We’re having fun with it,” Wellman said last Thursday. “We both respect each other as a soccer player and as a person. It was nice having a familiar face in the group.”

Wellman was named one of the three finalists out of the Tukwila tryout. Before Sunday night’s finale, Wellman noted the fact that two of the final 10 were Sammamish and BCC products, giving the credit to coaches and teammates at the two institutions.

“Having the Sammamish connection, it’s nice to see because it means the people around us are contributing to our success,” he said. “It’s not just two individuals working hard, it’s the people around us. I think you have to give a lot of credit to the people at Sammamish and BCC; those people have been essential.”
