Swimming Championships: Interlake boys take fourth at state

Thanks to second place finishes by Alex Rockwell and Victor Hsiao and a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay, the Interlake boys swim team finished fourth at the 2009 2A state championship swim meet.

While Sehome High School of Bellingham ran away with the team title, the Saints placed in seven events. Rockwell finished second in the 500 freestyle and sixth in the 200 freestyle and Hsiao took second in the 100 backstroke and fourth in the 100 butterfly. Both helped to anchor the all-sophomore 200 medley relay team along with Eldon Cummings and Yuji Nelson, which finished second.

Cummings took fifth in the 200 individual medley and junior Hayden Ray placed seventh in the 100 breastroke.

The Saints were named as the WIAA 2A State Academic Champions, with a complete team GPA of 3.63.

In the 3A meet, Bellevue took third in the 200 medley relay and sixth in the 400 freestyle relay. Senior Andrew Mooers took sixth in the 200 freestyle and seventh in the 100 freestyle. Teammate Geoffrey Stokes finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke.

Sammamish’s Nate Gockel finished fifth in the 100 freestyle. In the 4A meet, Newport’s Mark Molnar finished third in the 50 freestyle, second in the 100 freestyle and helped the Knights finish in sixth in the 400 freestyle relay.
