Woodworth helps Vikings to D-II basketball national title

Newport grad and Western Washington University junior Richard Woodworth scored 10 points to help his Vikings to the program’s first ever Division II men’s basketball national championship on Saturday over Montevallo (Alabama).

“I don’t know if it’s sunk in all the way yet, but it’s a pretty incredible feeling,” Woodworth told the University’s athletic site.

Along with the 10 points, Woodworth had a team-high nine rebounds and four assists in the win.

The 31 wins for Western in 2011-12 were the most in program history and give coach Brad Jackson a national title in his 27th year at the helm in Bellingham.
