Saints soccer makes state for first time in 23 years

Interlake made the state tournament for the first time in 23 years with a 3-0 shutout of Fife.

Thanks to a 3-0 shutout victory over Nisqually League champion Fife, the Interlake Saints boys soccer team qualified for the state playoffs for the first time in 23 years.

Interlake (7-8-2) had trouble getting started, spending much of the first 24 minutes in their own half of the field before Andy Fordyce opened up the game’s scoring with a goal in the 25th minute of a pass from Miguel Castillo.

The majority of the play continued in the Interlake end of the field until Jordan Con was fouled in the penalty box in the 39th minute. Con scored on the ensuing penalty kick to give the Saints a 2-0 lead heading into the half.

Interlake all but put away the game in the 41st minute, after a crisp display of passing resulted in Con hitting Will Glenny with a pass that Glenny buried to finish up the game’s scoring. Alex Quintana earned the shutout for the Saints, who kept the majority of the second-half action in the Fife (10-5) end of the field.

Interlake played reigning-state champion Sehome Tuesday in the first round of the state playoffs. That result was unavailable as of Reporter press time.
