Saints hopes dashed by Sehome in first round of state

The defending state champions crashed Interlake’s party.

The Saints, in the state soccerplayoffs for the first time in 23 years, lost to Sehome 3-1 and were eliminated in the first round of the 2A state tournament.

Interlake led 1-0 early on a goal by Jordan Con in the game’s seventh minute and seemed to have scored another 10 minutes later – but the goal was called back due to an offsides call.

The momentum switch sides shortly after when Nino Tursic scored the first of his two goals into the game, heading the ball past Interlake goalkeeper Jesse Hernandez in the 25th minute. Mike Klein scored just eight minutes later and Sehome cruised into the half with a 2-1 lead.

Tursic scored his second goal of the game in the 43rd minute and Sehome peppered the Saints net – the Mariners had 18 shots on goal – for the duration of the game.

The Mariners advance and will face off with Squalicum, who defeated Centrailia 8-1.

Interlake ends its season with a record of 7-9-2.
