Newport takes second at KingCo Swim Championships

Thanks to a strong finish in the 4×100 freestyle relay, Newport was able to earn a second place finish in the KingCo Championships, held Saturday, Oct. 31 at the Mary Wayte Pool on Mercer Island.

The Knights team of Haley Anderson, Jordan Lee, Carolina Van Maren and Monique Saysana posted a team of 3:43.47, besting Juanita by just six-tenths of a second to take first place in the event, boosting the Knights to a team total of 407 points.

Mercer Island won the event, in which all 18 KingCo teams participate, scoring 586 points.

Newport, however, had strong finishes across the board. Anderson finished fourth in the 50-yard free (25.44) and seventh in the 100-yard fly (1:02.84), while Van Maren took ninth in the 50-yard free (26.40) and also helped Newport finish fourth in the 200 yard medley relay, alongside Jordan Lee, Robyn Thompson and Saysana.

Lee took fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.04) and Saysana earned a seventh place finish in the 100-yard free in 54.83.

Bellevue finished fifth in the championships with 338 points. The Wolverines had strong finishes from Rachel Schneider, who took second place in the 100-yard free with a time of 55.52 and third in the 200-yard free in 1:59.18.

Sammamish took 13th with 197 points, while Interlake finished 16th with 112 points.

Newport coach Eric Bartleson was named the KingCo Coach of the Year.
