Newport fourth, Bellevue sixth | State swim and dive roundup

The Knights and Wolverines were at King County Aquatic Center for the swim and dive state championships and both brought home top six team finishes.

After taking the top time in the preliminaries, Brian Rugles of Issaquah held off Sebastian Bury of Newport in the finals by just a tenth of a second with a winning time of 47.39.

Eastlake’s Edward Kim picked up a championship and Automatic All-American time in the 100 backstroke, winning in 48.84 ahead of Logan Rysemus of Stadium with Newport’s Dehlan Gwo in fifth with a time of 54.17.

Benton Allen of Newport was the highest KingCo finisher in the 500 free, just in front of Alec Raines of Skyline.

The Knights were fourth in the team scoring behind champion Stadium, Issaquah, and Kamiak.

Bellevue finished sixth in the team scoring and was the third finisher from 3A KingCo behind second place Mercer Island and fourth place Liberty. Lakeside won the team title by 11 points over the 2011 champion Islanders.

The Wolverines got things started early as Michael Stanchi, Casey Lee, Jamie Doucette and Carl Andrews finished fifth in the 200 medley relay.

Andrews earned All-American consideration time with a second place finish in 21.09 in the 50 free, just behind Zach Wagner of Lakeside and took third in the 100 free in 47.05.

Stanchi took fourth in the 500 free in 4:40.75 and was third in the 100 backstroke in 52.09.

The Wolverines finished the day with a seventh place finish in the 400 free relay as Andrews, Matt Williams, Doucette and Stanchi finished in 3:16.89. just behind O’Dea.

Sammamish took a disqualification in the A Final of the 200 free relay.

Interlake was represented in a pair of events with Sheridan Conrad finishing sixth in the 500 free and Michael Lorr eighth in the 100 breastroke.
