Myers leaves coaching post at Interlake after three seasons

David Myers and his family will be moving to Spokane in early April

March 10 was an emotional day for Interlake Saints head football coach David Myers.

After coaching the Saints for three seasons, Myers meandered into a team meeting room for the final time, announcing to his players his resignation from the Saints head coaching position. Myers, who led the Saints to an overall record of 9-20 during his three-year tenure at Interlake, said he was proud of how far the program has came since taking the helm in 2013.

“We feel pretty good about what we have done here. We started out 1-9, went to 3-6 and then finished 5-5 this most recent year,” he said. “We felt like we have been able to build over the last three years. I feel that the program is set up for future successes. It was definitely hard. These are kids that I have spent a lot of time with. We had a team meeting after school and they (players) didn’t know what it was about. I had a letter for them and told them in person. I thought it was the right way to do it and just wanted to make sure they heard it from me. Some of the kids were sad and crying. I was on the brink of tears. It was tough.”

It was so important to Myers that he informed his players face-to-face about his decision that he sought out football players on the baseball team — who wouldn’t had been able to attend the meeting due to a game — to inform them so they didn’t hear from the masses later in the evening.

“I ended up having to tell kids at different times. I knew the baseball team had to leave early for a game so I wanted to make sure I told them early. Our quarterback Duncan Varela’s reaction was, ‘Is our offense going to change?’ I said, ‘I don’t know. I hope not.’ I told them I’d imagine this job (head coaching position) would be pretty desirable. We have great kids here at Interlake. There is a lot of potential. Hopefully somebody sees that also and wants to come in and do well by a great group of kids.”

Myers is leaving Interlake because his wife Dawn landed a coveted position as director of community housing and human services for the city of Spokane. Myers, his wife, 3-year-old child and 11-month old infant will be moving to Spokane in early April. Myers said his final day at Interlake High School will be April 1.

“My wife got an awesome job. She is a rockstar. It is a lot of responsibility and she is going to do awesome …,” Myers said. “I’m excited to support her and am excited for our family.”

Myers said he plans on being a substitute teacher until he can land a full-time teaching position in the Spokane area this fall.
