Michelle Lui from Forest Ridge won her third state title on the tennis court last weekend.

Michelle Lui, a junior at Forest Ridge, won her third straight 1B/2B/1A girls tennis state title last week at the Yakima Tennis Center, winning all eight of the sets she played in four matches to move one step closer to becoming the third four-year champion in 1A state history.

Lui, a nationally ranked player in her age group, beat Megan Elliot of Kiona Benton 2-0 (6-0, 6-0) in her first match before taking care of Tracy Melville of Lind-Ritzville Sprague by the same tally in the quarterfinals.

Shalyn Goodall of Omak, who Lui beat in the state title match last year, managed to take two games in this year’s semi-finals, but still fell in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) before the two-time defending state champion swept Hayley Newmann of South Whidbey 6-0, 6-0 in the finals.
