The scholarships were awarded to three high school seniors that reside in Newcastle or attend Liberty or Hazen high schools and was based on GPA, college board exam scores, financial need, an essay and community involvement. Annie Trumbull of Liberty and Priscilla Yu of Hazen were the other two recipients.

The funds for the scholarships came from proceeds from the 2011 Newcastle 5K Run/Walk.

Newport alum Hagensen leads PLU to softball title

Stacey Hagensen, a 2008 Newport grad and former KingCo MVP for the Knights, was named Most Outstanding Player at the Division III softball championships in Virginia as she helped Pacific Lutheran to the National Championship with a 3-0 win in the finals.

The shutout was the second of the year for Hagensen over the Wildcats, which won the title last season.

The senior worked a complete game in the circle and allowed only three hits, striking out four and not walking a batter in her final collegiate game.
