On July 20 at The Golf Club at Newcastle, Soccer Saves, a non-profit humanitarian organization based in Bellevue, will feature a sports celebrity golf tournament followed by a roast of legendary soccer coach Cliff McCrath, coach at Seattle Pacific University for 37 years.

Seattle Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid and goalkeeper Kasey Keller will be on hand along with sportscaster Kevin Calabro and NBA Hall-of-Famer Lenny Wilkens.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Soccer Saves, which aims to promote healthy lifestyles for disadvantaged youth in Africa. Partnering with the Save the Children Foundation, the goal is to use soccer to attract teens to programs on HIV/AIDS education, gender equity and reproductive health education.

“Anything that involves salvaging kids and helping develop healthy lifestyles has my attention,” said McCrath, who was recently inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame. McCrath founded Soccer Saves with former Microsoft executive Frank Schott.

Seattle businessman Al Hendricks, longtime sponsor of SPU’s Falcon Legends Hall of Fame luncheons to honor the school’s sports stars, is the primary sponsor of the Soccer Saves fundraiser.

“I’ve been around the world and I thought Africa was a place where Soccer Saves could be very helpful,” said Hendricks.

The tournament will start at 1 p.m., and among the prizes is a Phil Smart 2009 C-350 Mercedes for a hole-in-one on the contest hole.
