Downs, Olzendam to be inducted into WIBCA Hall of Fame

The Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association will induct seven new members - into their Hall of Fame with ceremonies on July 22 at Whitworth University and July 29 at Seattle Pacific University.

The Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association will induct seven new members – into their Hall of Fame with ceremonies on July 22 at Whitworth University and July 29 at Seattle Pacific University.

The inductees include current Bellevue Christian University coach Mike Downs and former Newport coach Dave Olzendam.

Olzendam, a former coach at Medical Lake, Rochester, Coulee-Hartline an Newport, will be honored at the Spokane ceremony alongside Dwight Pflugrath (Ritzville, Mansfield, Brewster) and longtime assistant coach Toivo Piippo (St. Joseph Junior High of Richland).

Downs will be honred alongside Bill Bakamus (Toledo, Coulee-Hartline, Mark Morris), and longtime Mark Morris assistant Steve McCallum. Phil Lumpkin, the longtime Seattle Prep and O’Dea coach, will also be inducted. Lumpkin passed away last November.

John McCrossin, former high school coach and current Fife administrator, will receive the Ed Pepple Service Award for his outstanding contributions to the coaching profession.

Both banquets begin with a social hour at 5 p.m. followed by dinner and induction ceremony at 6 p.m. Cost is $30. Reservations can be made with Dave Dickson at 360-201-5218 or ddickson@bham.wednet.edu.
