Bellevue, Sammamish fall in Quaker Summer Slam

It may be summertime, but high school basketball was in full swing last weekend at Franklin High School.

Bellevue and Sammamish were among the 32 teams competing in the massive Quaker Summer Slam tournament, which came to its end in the same fashion as the high school season: with the Quakers holding up the championship.

Franklin, which lost all five starters from it’s 3A state championship team this season, went 5-0 and beat Jefferson 90-83 in the title game to take home the trophy.

Bellevue finished in 12th place, losing to Garfield 73-55 in the 6th/12th game. The Wolverines beat Eisenhower 46-44 in the first round and got past Lincoln 78-70 a game later to reach the quarterfinals against the Josh Smith-led Kentwood Conks, who dropped the Wolverines 71-59.

Bellevue’s Ian Gordan led the Wolverines in scoring in the tournament, scoring 10.8 points per game.

Sammamish finished 20th, losing 89-58 to Franklin in the first round. The Totems beat West Seattle 66-46 in the next game, but lost 59-35 to Mark Morris. They then beat Eisenhower 70-46 in the 20th/26th-place game.

Sammamish’s Anthony Do and Bellevue’s Nate Sikma were named All-Tournament selections.
