Ballard duo light up Newport

John Barnes and Eric Taylor combined to score 44 points to help Ballard race past Newport 55-40 in Seattle on Jan. 6.

Barnes and Taylor each scored 22 points as Ballard (4-4, 1-3 KingCo 4A) outscored Newport 29-17 in the first half.

The 22 points were a season high for Barnes, a 6-foot-6 junior forward, while Taylor’s 22 brought the senior guards scoring average up to 13.6 points per game.

Richard Woodworth led Newport with 13 points in the loss, the sixth time the senior has been the Knights leading scorer this year. Woodworth, a senior guard, is averaging 17.7 points per game for Newport (3-5, 2-2).

The loss dropped Newport into third place in the KingCo 4A Crest Division. Garfield, bolstered by the return of Tony Wroten Jr., leads the division at 3-0. Skyline is in second at 2-1.

Bellevue Christian 82, Northwest School 31

Bellevue Christian outscored Northwest School 29-8 in the second quarter and allowed only 11 second-half points as the Vikings won the Emerald City League contest 82-31.

The Vikings (5-4, 3-0 Emerald City League) were led by Jeff Rerucha with 14 points, one of four Bellevue Christian players in double figures.

Patrick Nicoll scored 14 points for Northwest School (0-8, 0-2) in the defeat.

Sammamish 58, Hazen 55

David Wink and Anthony Do each scored 14 points as the Totems defeated Hazen 58-55 in a non-league contest in Renton.

The game was tied at 39 heading into the fourth quarter but Sammamish (4-4, 1-2 KingCo 3A/2A) outscored the Highlanders 19-16 in the final frame.

Hazen’s Caleb Frary scored a game-high 22 points and was the only Highlander in double figures. The loss drops Hazen to 1-6 overall.

Bellevue Christian 49, Northwest School 21

Maren Haines scored a season-high 18 points and Terra Oldham chipped in 13 as Bellevue Christian defeated Northwest School 49-21.

Bellevue Christian (5-1, 2-0 Emerald City League) built a big first half lead, outscoring Northwest School 30-7 in the first two frames.

Lindsey Miller scored 11 points to lead Northwest School (2-5, 0-2) in the loss.

Liberty 80, Sammamish 24

Halie Erickson scored 17 points and Corinna Van Hurston added 14 as the Patriots blew past the Totems 80-24 in Bellevue.

Liberty (8-1, 3-0 KingCo 3A/2A) outscored Sammamish 39-5 in the second half.

Kendell Dougherty led Sammamish (09-6, 0-3) with eight points.
