Avid weightlifter thrives on the field

Newport Knights football player David Kim is one of the strongest players on his team, packing a powerful punch despite being undersized at the linebacker position in the KingCo Conference

Newport Knights inside linebacker David Kim is a prime example that size has nothing to do with being an exceptional football player.

Kim, who stands 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs 178 pounds, will start at inside linebacker for the Knights this fall. Kim may be one of the smallest players in the starting lineup, but he is undoubtedly one of the strongest. Kim said he bench presses 320 pounds and squats 455 pounds. He also has a one rep max of 260 pounds in power cleans and can dead-lift a staggering 500 pounds. The senior linebacker credits Newport assistant coach Bob Richardson for introducing him to the world of weightlifting.

“I started lifting weights in the eighth grade. When I became a freshman coach Bob (Richardson) introduced me to powerlifting. I just started working out hard,” Kim said.

The senior linebacker enjoys being a student of the game.

“If I play with too much aggression it can hurt me. I love to play with passion and play fast. We’re a team that is always prepared going into a game,” he said. “We take pride in stopping the run.”

The Knights advanced to the Class 4A semifinals last year and finished the 2014 season with an overall record of 10-3. The success of the 2014 squad is something on the minds of all Knights players this coming season.

“It puts a lot of pressure on us. Last year people didn’t think we would make it that far and we did,” Kim said. “We have a good squad this year. Most of us have played alongside each other since our freshman year. We are mostly a senior team. I can guarantee you we will be back there (state playoffs).”
