Area swimmers ready for state

Interlake won the West Central District III 2A championships for the third-straight year, scoring a commanding 270 points. The Saints bested 14 other teams to win the team title, and were bolstered by wins in all three relays and three individual titles. Interlake's 200 medley relay team, a quartet of seniors in Eldon Cummings, Alex Rockwell, Victor Hsiao and Yuji Nelson, set a meet-record with a time of 1:42.77.

The Saints bested 14 other teams to win the team title, and were bolstered by wins in all three relays and three individual titles.

Interlake’s 200 medley relay team, a quartet of seniors in Eldon Cummings, Alex Rockwell, Victor Hsiao and Yuji Nelson, set a meet-record with a time of 1:42.77.

Cummings (100 free) and Hsiao (100 butterfly) each won individual events and also tied with each other for first place in the 100 back.

Cummings, Hsiao, Rockwell, Nelson, Albert Barroga, Conrad Sheridan and Jason Xu will all compete in the state championship met at the King County Aquatic Center. The meet begins Friday and continues into Saturday.

Interlake had several top finishers at the meet. Xu (2nd) and Sheridan (3rd) both placed in the 200 free, while Nelson took third in the 50 free. Sheridan and Xu were at it again in the 500 free, with Sheridan taking second this time and Xu following in third. Rockwell finished third in the 100 breaststroke.

Hsiao, Rockwell, Daniel Olleman and Benjamin Titus were recognized as district scholar-athletes for maintaining a grade point average of above 3.75 while competing at the varsity level.

Newport finishes second at Sea-King 4A District meet

Newport scored 198 points at the Sea-King 4A District meet, barely falling to first-place Roosevelt, who took the title with 208 team points.

Newport junior Dehlan Gwo won both the 100 fly (54.57) and the 100 back (55.85), while teammate Ben Allen took first in the 200 free in 1:44.70.

The Newport team of Nicholas Weiss, Sebastian Bury, Allen and Gwo won the 400 free relay in 3:19.46, just edging out Issaquah (3:20.77).

Newport’s 200 yard free relay team finished second to Eastlake by .03 seconds.

Bury took third in the 50 free, finishing in 22.61. Allen finished second in the 100 free.

Allen (200 free, 100 free), Weiss (200 free, 100 fly), Bury (50 free, 100 free) and Gwo (100 fly, 100 back) will all compete in today’s state meet. Newport’s 200 and 400 free relay teams will compete.

Bellevue finishes 8th at 3A districts; Sammamish takes 10th

No area swimmers were able to crack the top-5, but both Bellevue and Sammamish will send swimmers on to state following last weekend’s Sea-King 3A District meet.

Bellevue’s top finish came in the 400 free relay, where the team of Jake VanWolvelaere, James Doucette, Stuart McClelland and Kenzie Mackie finished in sixth place in 3:28.26.

Sammamish’s Matt McKaig will compete in today’s state meet in the 50 free and 100 free.

Mackie (100 fly), Doucette (100 fly), VanWolvelaere (100 back), McClelland (100 breast) and Geoffrey Stokes (100 breast) will all compete as well.

Bellevue’s 200 medley relay team qualified for state, as did Sammamish’s 200 medley and 200 free teams.
