‘Yes’ on I-1107, the candy, soda tax

Earlier this year, the Legislature faced a decision: make the hard choice to prioritize programs or find something new to tax. Big surprise, the majority chose a new sales tax on candy, some bottled water and an excise tax on carbonated beverages.

Apparently candy and colas are seen as easy targets – not much harm. But the real issue is the move by lawmakers to sneak new taxes onto food-like items that we buy in grocery and convenience stores. What gets taxed the next time the Legislature wants more money – breakfast cereal? How about that apple a day that keeps the doctor away?

The Legislature needs to stop the taxing. A ‘Yes’ on I-1107 will reverse the taxes and force the Legislature to do its job.
