Barbara Josephine (Westervelt) Hood

Barbara Josephine Hood of Bellevue, died in her home on Sunday Sept. 26, 2010 from complications following heart surgery. Barbara was born in 1932 to Clinton and Josephine Westervelt in Portland, Oregon. She graduated from Washington High School and Lewis & Clark College, both in Portland. While at Lewis & Clark she met her future husband Stuart who was attending Portland State College. During their college years, they enjoyed social functions at both schools. Barbara and Stuart were married in Portland in 1955 and treasured 55 years together as husband and wife. They had 2 children, Lance J. Hood and Mark A. Hood. The family moved to Bellevue in 1967. Not long after their arrival in Bellevue, Barbara began working at the local elementary school and became a long-term employee of the Bellevue School District, retiring after 20 years of service. Barbara and Stuart were fortunate to travel the world together, visiting Europe, Asia, Central America and the South Pacific. Barbara loved the adventure of travel, meeting new people and experiencing new cultures. At home, Barbara was a passionate and active member of the Newport Covenant Church, a supporter of cancer awareness and research, a friend to many, a devoted wife to Stuart, a loving mother to her sons, and a grandmother who enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her grandchildren. Barbara is survived by her husband Stuart M. Hood; her son Lance J. Hood, his wife Nancy and their three children Aimee, Gordon and Erin; her son Mark A. Hood, his wife Linda and their daughter Emilee; her brother Dr. Clinton A. Westervelt Jr., his wife Thora and their daughter Gwen Marie Macallister; and her cousin James Hanson and his wife Jean. A memorial service will be held at Newport Covenant Church, 12800 SE Coal Creek Parkway, Bellevue 98006 at 10:00 AM on Friday, Oct 8, 2010. A private service will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery. The family suggests remembrances may be made in her name to the Newport Covenant Church or the American Cancer Society.
