Workers needed for census count on Eastside

King County is gearing up for the 2010 US Census, which, for many area residents, translates to well-paying temporary jobs while helping out community and country.

Every 10 years the U.S. Census Bureau takes a survey of the entire national population. This data about how communities are changing is vital information for area improvements, public services and planning for emergencies. The data is also used to determine every region’s representation in government and to help direct federal funding allocated for local projects, such as highways and bridges, public health and community-based programs.

The 2010 Census questionnaire will be sent to every U.S. household in March. This creates an opportunity for area residents to actively participate in their communities. Specifically, census takers are needed to conduct interviews with people who don’t return questionnaires. To complete this undertaking, the Census Bureau will hire thousands of census takers. Most “field” positions have flexible schedules, which may include evenings and weekends.

Census taker jobs are temporary, usually close to home and pay a competitive wage. The rate for most field employees in this area is $17.50 an hour, including paid training. Census job applicants should be at least 18 and possess a valid Social Security number. Most will need a valid driver’s license.

Many applicants are still needed throughout Seattle’s Eastside. Those interested should call 1-866-861-2010 to sign up for a 30-minute, multiple-choice basic-skills test. Practice tests are available online at www.2010censusjobs.gov.
