Woodland Park Zoo to help people turn backyard into a wildlife habitat

In a four-part Backyard Habitat workshop, experts will show how to attract birds and other wildlife to your backyard, select and care for native plants, recognize and remove invasive plants, conserve water, manage your yard without chemical herbicides and pesticides, and place feeders and bird houses.

Information also will be provided on how to get a backyard, schoolyard or community garden certified as a Backyard Habitat.

Cost for the course is $75 per person or $140 for couples. The course will be held at Overlake School in Redmond, 20301 Northeast 108th St.

The second course will dead with “Butterflies and Bees.” Woodland Park Zoo entomologist Erin Sullivan and horticulturist David Selk will discuss how to attract and care for local butterflies and bees.

The four-part Backyard Habitat Workshop will be taught

Monday, March 1, 7-9 p.m.; Monday, March 8, 7-9 p.m.; Monday, March 15, 7-9 p.m.; and Saturday, March 20, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Butterflies and Bees class will be taught Tuesday, April 13, 7-9 p.m.

Cost for the course is $30 a person. The course will be held at Woodland Park Zoo’s Education Center, 5500 Phinney Avenue North, Seattle.
