Twelve Bellevue students have been selected to rocket into summer residencies with Washington Aerospace Scholars.

Washington Aerospace Scholars is an educational program offered by the Museum of Flight that provides students with hands-on education in science, technology, engineering and math disciplines.

The residency program hosts 160 residents across four summer sessions, whittled down from 308 applicants. Every applicant was required to carry through a five-month online course jointly designed by staff of the University of Washington and NASA for the purpose of distinguishing their academic performance. The applicants could register to earn five college credits for completion of the curriculum.

Bellevue’s residents will be:

Bellevue High School
Yash Aluru, Eric Feldman, Kevin Guo, Ali Juhani, Nick Magill and Grant Neuman.

Interlake High School
Alex Boulton and George Sun.

Newport High School
Ben Baek, Amrita Ram and Tristan Toyohara.

Sammamish High School
Kamilah Constable.

The students will design a manned mission to Mars under the advisement of engineers, scientists, university students and educators; they will also compete in engineering challenges, sit in on aerospace briefings and tour sites like the Boeing Commercial Airplane assembly plant and UW engineering laboratories.

Summer 2014 will be the eighth year of the Washington Aerospace Scholars program.
