Spiritridge takes second in national chess tournament

The Spiritridge chess team has won second place at the 2013 Super Nationals K-12 chess championship.

 

The Spiritridge chess team has won second place at the 2013 Super Nationals K-12 chess championship. The team won in the K-5 section, missing missing first place by only a half point. Spiritridge also won the second place team trophy in K-6 Blitz Championship.

The annual event, organized by the United States Chess Federation, brings together the best scholastic chess players from around the country. More than 5,335 K-12 students representing 1565 Teams from 50 states competed April 5-7 in Nashville, Tenn.

Eight students from Spiritridge Elementary school participated in the tournament: Derek Zhang (fifth grade), Zachary Zhang (fifth grade), Naomi Bashansky (fourth grade), Brian Chen (fourth grade), Richard Yang (fourth grade), Neil Chowdhury (third grade), Eric Boglyubov (first grade) and Aaron Boglyubov (kindergarten).

Derek Zhang won individual 9th place in K-5 Championship section. Zachary Zhang won individual 12th place in K-6 Blitz Championship. Naomi Bashansky and Zachary Zhang also tied for the 30th place in K-5 Championship section.

In the Bughouse tournament, Derek Zhang teamed up with Jason Yang, from Odle Middle School, to win ninth place out of 64 teams in K-9 section.
