Six from Bellevue receive college-sponsored Merit Scholarships

Six Bellevue students have received college-sponsored Merit Scholarships. Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among Finalists in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.

The awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.

Those receiving scholarships are:

Ruby F. Brallier, Newport High School. Probable career field: Music Performance (Cello). Lawrence University scholarship. Lawrence University is a nationally recognized undergraduate college of liberal arts and sciences and conservatory of music.

Zhuolun Cheng, Newport High School. Probable career field: Economics. University of Chicago scholarship. The University of Chicago is small, private, coeducational, and residential; it has an international reputation for distinction.

Kristin L. Ivarson, Newport High School. Probable career field: Applied Mathematics. University of Washington scholarship.

Taylor D. Mesojednik, Bellevue High School. Probable career field: Microbiology, Whitman College Scholarship. Whitman is an independent, coeducational, nonsectarian liberal arts college of 1,100 students, located in Walla Walla.

Maia D. Szafer, International School. Probable career field: Medicine. University of Washington Scholarship.

Ruofan Yu, Newport High School. Probable career field: Software Engineering. University of Washington scholarship.
